Sir: Rather than turning the Millennium Dome into some sort of
Disneyland Experience, it should be transformed into a purpose built,
state-of-the-art parliament building with electronic voting and
modern speech and behaviour. It would house 200 MPs (the other 459
could be "culled") and 200 elected but unpaid members of an "upper"
chamber. They would need to be unpaid so as to attract the "right
sort" of politician.
We could then turn the Palace of Westminster into a "superluxury"
hotel where American and Japanese tourists could luxuriate in an
atmosphere laden with history at, say, pounds 1,000 per night and
could take it in turns to sit on the throne and the Woolsack in the
(former) House ...
