Patuxent senior Ryan Hawkins did not call the timeout his coach
wanted with 33 seconds remaining and the Panthers trailing La Plata
by a point in Tuesday's Maryland 3A South Region quarterfinal.
Instead, Hawkins dribbled down the left side of the court and pulled
up to hit a five-foot jumper over the outstretched arms of two La
Plata defenders with 26 seconds left, giving host Patuxent a 55-54
win.
The victory was the 11th in 12 games for the third-seeded
Panthers, arguably the hottest team in Southern Maryland right now.
Patuxent (16-7) will play second-seeded Northern in a regional
semifinal tonight--the Patriots advanced by knocking off Calvert, 61-
41, on Tuesday.
