A "BIONIC" hand designed for children has been hailed as a success
after it was tested on five youngsters.
The electronic device, called Prodigits, was designed for children
who had lost or were born without part of their hands. It is the
first time an artificial hand has been developed suitable for such
young children.
Five children aged between two and 11 tested two versions of the
hand in a six-month trial at Nottingham's City Hospital. In the
first, a tiny pressure pad activates the motors when pressure from
the patient's wrist is applied inside a special cuff. The second,
more advanced, device uses a silicone rubber interface between the
