Like some sad Coronation Street obsessive, I emerged from the Granada building in Manchester a few weeks ago carrying a pair of Coronation Street oven gloves, a Coronation Street tea cosy, several Coronation Street dish-cloths and a plastic Coronation Street alarm clock. The producer, Jane Macnaught, had loaded them into my arms after a chinwag lasting night on two hours. And, fuelled by a potent combination of bonhomie and sauvignon blanc, I not only accepted them but was genuinely thrilled.
