THE TECHNOLOGY boom is over, the US economy is stalling, and New Economy share prices are in the doldrums, but nothing can dent the optimism of those two titans of the digital age - Bill Gates of Microsoft and John Chambers of Cisco.

Here in Davos yesterday, the two gave an impressively upbeat view of the continuing power of information technology to transform our lives and the efficiency of business.

"For the long term, I have never been more optimistic", said Mr Chambers, president and chief executive of the networking products company, Cisco Systems. "Yes, things are slowing down much more swiftly than people thought they would, but I believe it is a couple of quarters phenomenon.
