On the drive down into Montana from its northern border, it is not
immediately clear what has attracted a whole posse of high-profile
pioneers - led by Ted Turner and Jane Fonda, David Letterman, and the
legendary quarterback John Ellway - to set up homes in the state. The
landscape is big and tough, but no more remarkable than in other
parts of the Wild West. And the businesses which line the roadside on
the journey along the Flathead Valley to Whitefish seem oddly ill-
fitted to the needs of the new-age rancher. It is easy enough to get
a muffler fixed, buy liquor, or eat breakfast at any time of day; but
in 50 miles you don't pass a single health-food store, cappuccino bar
or Subaru ...
