Lisa T. Murphy is about to give birth to a child. She has already
given birth to a debate.
The question: Why don't seated Metro riders leap to offer a seat
to pregnant women--especially riders sitting in the "elderly and
handicapped" seats?
Lisa wrote me last month to decry the rudeness of her fellow
passengers. She's about six months pregnant and commutes daily via
the Orange Line. Most seated riders are so self-absorbed that they
don't even glance at her, much less hop to their feet, she says.
Lisa has resolved to start asking for a seat. In the meantime, she
asked me to use this column to poll the readership about the issue.
