IN MAY 1956 Elvis Presley was becoming an international sensation
with his first RCA single, "Heartbreak Hotel". The record topped the
US charts but it could not dislodge the British balladeer Ronnie
Hilton, who held on to the UK top spot for six weeks with "No Other
Love". "Having a hit record is like having an ace up your sleeve,"
Hilton told me:
In 1959 I had "The Wonder of You", which was a big hit while I was
doing a summer season at Blackpool. Ten years later Presley brought
his version out and I thought, "He's taking a liberty. It's not much
different from the way I did it all those years ago."
Ronnie Hilton was born Adrian Hill in Hull in 1926. His first job
