SIR PETER Davis, chief executive of J Sainsbury, was in
characteristically polished form yesterday for his Christmas trading
update, but there's no getting away from it - with like-for-like
sales up just 0.7 per cent, Sainsbury's performance over the
Christmas period was in absolute terms uninspiring, even poor.
William Morrison has already said that Christmas trading "easily
surpassed previous records", while trading statements next week from
Tesco and Safeway will almost certainly confirm Sainsbury's
continuing lot as the supermarket laggard.
Still, it might have been worse, and at least Sir Peter was able
to vanquish City fears that Sainsbury's was failing to meet even its
own, rather ...
