UNTIL THE final thrilling point was over, the match could have
gone either way, as a trembling Gustavo Kuerten acknowledged soon
afterwards. And yet Greg Rusedski drove himself with such guts and
passion that his defeat of the world's No 1 player seemed almost
predestined.
Rusedski, who went into the Australian Open with no expectations,
caused the biggest upset of the tournament last night, knocking out
the top-seeded Brazilian in the second round after a five-set match
so close that it was painful to watch. He survived one match point,
two dubious line calls and dive-bombing moths to pluck the 4-6, 6-4,
6-3, 2-6, 9-7 win out of nowhere.
The British No 2 was out of action with injuries ...
