FOR THOSE of you who believe that seasoned investors know all the answers let me illustrate how far you are from the truth. This week I have spent hours trying to solve the conundrum that vexes every private investor: when to sell.

It's the question I get asked more than any other, and it is the one I avoid giving a direct answer to. This is because there are so many answers, and whatever I say will be wrong in either the majority or minority of cases. The only correct reply to "When should I sell?" seems to be "March 2000". But because such hindsight humour does not necessarily help, I have tried to identify more positive indicators.
