MY BIGGEST mistake was to be too enthusiastic, too quickly. In the
early Eighties, I was in my mid-thirties and new dean of the social
studies faculty at Queen Mary College. Restructuring was in the air,
and it was a difficult time because the college had to make cuts of
about pounds 1m.
In the government, Keith Joseph was gunning for the social
sciences, and the pressure was on institutions to merge to reduce
costs. In response, Queen Mary College had entered negotiations with
Goldsmiths College with a view to a possible merger.
They had a lot to offer one another. For example, Goldsmiths
boasted the distinguished Laban School of Dance, the art school that
