Article: GPs `failing to report drug side-effects'

THE PUBLIC's health is being put at risk because GPs are failing to report the dangerous side effects of new drugs.

A study which criticises the yellow card system - used by doctors to detail serious side effects - calls for patients to be allowed to bypass GPs and pharmacists and report the health effects themselves to the Medicines Control Agency.

The claim that doctors are not forwarding the data comes amid concerns that tens of thousands of people are admitted to hospital each year suffering adverse drug reactions. The study, by the Consumers' Association, accuses doctors of "gross under-reporting" of problematic pills to the MCA, the government body that ensures drugs safety.
