The coverage on CNN of the release last week of the US crew
detained by China after the collision of a US spy plane with a
Chinese fighter jet was, to put it mildly, relentless. On and on and
on. Cincinnati was experiencing race riots that warranted a night-
time curfew and the network barely noticed.
The handover on Hainan island was a good story, of course. It had
all the ingredients - military salutes mingled with tears, and, above
all, oodles of feelgood patriotism as the 24 American boys and girls
were finally on their way home. Much more importantly, however, CNN
had managed to furnish its Peking correspondent, Lisa Rose Weaver,
with mobile satellite equipment to transmit live ...
