FORTY YEARS ago Jacqueline Kennedy began to shimmer on the public
stage, accompanying her husband, John F Kennedy, on his campaign to
be president. Nostalgia for the days of Camelot in Washington
dictates that this is another Jackie anniversary that cannot be
allowed to pass quietly.
Thus the white marquees were up at the front steps of the
Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York on Monday night to receive the
great and the glittering of the fashion world for a $3,500-a-plate
(pounds 2,400) gala to mark the opening of Jacqueline Kennedy: The
White House Years. The show will run from 1 May until 29 July, and
