THE DESCENT of current affairs programmes into showbiz fare is about to accelerate.

On tomorrow's edition of Tonight With Trevor McDonald the veteran newscaster will preside over the Duchess of York's television debut as an investigative reporter. And anxious not to be left behind in the new era of non-cerebral reporting, the BBC is launching its own weekday current affairs programme, which it is promoting as "highly packaged and glossy", adjectives not readily associated with hard news.
