THE BBC is searching for a new chairman to replace Sir Christopher
Bland, who is leaving to take up the same position at BT.
The likely successor is the current deputy, Gavyn Davies, but the
appointment of the economist and Goldman Sachs partner is sure to
lead to accusations of cronyism. Mr Davies, who chaired an inquiry
into the corporation's funding, is a close ally of Labour. He is a
friend of Gordon Brown and his wife, Sue Nye, works in the
Chancellor's office.
Sir Christopher is not due to leave until his successor is in
place. But there were calls yesterday for him to go immediately amid
concern about a possible conflict of interest because BT is a
customer of the BBC.
