Article: Nato issues warning of civil war as Macedonia steps up shelling

MACEDONIAN HEAVY artillery shelled villages held by Albanian rebels in the second day of fighting yesterday - despite the presence of 3,500 civilians still believed to be inhabiting them.

Nato and the European Union are preparing to send their chief envoys to the country, and Lord Robertson of Port Ellen, the Nato secretary general, has warned the international community it must prevent the violence from leading to civil war.

There were unconfirmed reports that three civilians had been killed yesterday, and it was rumoured that one of them was a nine- year-old girl.

The Macedonian authorities accuse the rebels of forcibly preventing civilians from leaving and using them as human shields.
