In November 1990 I had the pleasure of talking to Chet Atkins for BBC Radio Merseyside, writes Spencer Leigh. He was promoting the CD Neck And Neck that he had made with a more contemporary guitar hero, Mark Knopfler. He was enthusiastic about the project and told me,

It's a lot easier and a lot more fun to make an album with somebody else. Their playing can give a stimulus to some idea that I might have, so it gets away from conformity.
