Article: Macedonia tries further peace talks and ceasefire to avert a civil war

WITH A shaky ceasefire back in force - for the time being - Macedonia watched nervously yesterday to see if peace talks, which went into a second day, can avert a civil war.

In the capital, Skopje, Albanians watch in fear as angry mobs of ethnic Macedonians hold almost nightly demonstrations against the Albanian rebellion. If a war comes, they fear they will be the targets. It is the same in Gostivar - only here, the Slav Macedonians are in the minority and fear they will be the targets. Last week, Macedonians in Gostivar watched as Albanian rebels attacked the centre of Tetovo, just 24km (15 miles) north, and Macedonians fled the city as the rebels took control of much of it.
