MATALAN, THE out-of-town discount retailer, has appointed Paul
Mason, the president of the Asda supermarket chain, as its new chief
executive.
Mr Mason, 41, has left Asda with immediate effect and will join
Matalan later this year.
He replaces Angus Monro, who was ousted from the chief executive
position at Matalan in a surprise move in April.
Mr Mason is the latest in a string of senior executives who have
quit Asda since being taken over by Wal-Mart Stores, the giant US
retailer, two years ago. Since then it has lost Archie Norman, its
then chairman, Allan Leighton, who was chief executive at the time
and George Davies, the design guru who is now designing a fashion
