Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi heaped praise on Yokozuna
Takanohana in the Summer Grand Sumo Tournament in May for battling
through the pain of an injured knee to win the tournament. The
premier is asking the people of Japan to endure their own pain as he
prepares to implement a raft of reforms aimed at putting the loan-
crippled economy in order. While Takanohana now faces a crisis in his
career as a sumo wrestler because he endured the pain, concerns are
growing that the Japanese economy may suffer an unrecoverable
breakdown if people implicitly accept Koizumi's plea.
