f you smoke or drink heavily or there's a history of illness in the family, you might think that life insurance or critical illness cover would be ruinously expensive.

But this isn't necessarily so. "Many of those drinking, smoking or eating `too much' may well shy away from cover for fear of being unduly penalised for their bad habits," says Heather Armstrong, marketing manager at Scottish Equitable Protect. "However, they will most likely find that these vital forms of financial protection cost far less than they think."
