TO THOSE of a certain age - or simply with a fondness for the
history of the game - today's meeting between Burnley and Wimbledon
is not just another league match, it is redolent of an altogether
different era.
That era was the mid-1970s, when the Lancashire team was still in
the top flight of English football and the south Londoners were an up-
and- coming team in the Southern League.
More to the point, given Wimbledon's well-publicised troubles
right now in finding a permanent home, those were the days when they
had one. It was in south-west London and was at Plough Lane, their
seat for 79 years.
