In Baz Luhrmann's frantic musical Moulin Rouge there is much to
admire, and hardly anything to enjoy. It is the work of an artist
who, loving the romance of movies and pop music, has attempted a
wild, flamboyant synthesis of the two, and for some filmgoers it will
be the greatest thing to appear in a cinema this year. I wish I was
one of them.
Moulin Rouge thunders past you like a fire engine on its way to a
blaze, siren blaring. From the opening seconds - a miniature
conductor leading a fanfare beneath a red curtain - it announces an
intense theatricality; this is going to dazzle the eyes, even if it
won't be quite so much fun for the ears. The year is 1899 ("the
