In Baz Luhrmann's frantic musical Moulin Rouge there is much to admire, and hardly anything to enjoy. It is the work of an artist who, loving the romance of movies and pop music, has attempted a wild, flamboyant synthesis of the two, and for some filmgoers it will be the greatest thing to appear in a cinema this year.
