The Washington Redskins have completed a contract with free agent
cornerback Tyronne Drakeford, sources close to the situation said
yesterday.
According to sources, Drakeford's salary for the upcoming season
will be $440,000, the NFL minimum for veterans. But Redskins
officials believe the acquisition is more significant than the terms
indicate.
Drakeford, who turns 29 on Wednesday, has started for the San
Francisco 49ers and New Orleans Saints. He becomes the Redskins' No.
4 cornerback, behind Deion Sanders, Champ Bailey and Darrell Green.
He gives the Redskins insurance in case Sanders can't stay healthy,
Green loses a step at age 40 or Bailey struggles as a second-year
pro.
