Article: Proposal On Term Limits Rejected; Council Won't Put Issue on Ballot

The County Council this week rejected a proposal to let voters decide whether term limits for council members and the county executive should be scrapped. The 7-2 vote appeared to settle an issue that provoked debate among the lawmakers for more than a month; council members needed six of nine votes to put the measure on the November ballot.

But council member Thomas R. Hendershot (D-New Carrollton) said he's not quite done with the topic and may still seek to let citizens decide whether the term limit law, on the books since 1992, should be killed.

"There's a preponderance of support for putting to the people the question of term limits," Hendershot said after the council vote Tuesday.
