English teeth are nothing to be proud of. On the contrary, they're
things to regard with shame. When the writer Toby Young was hanging
out in Manhattan in 1995 and trying to impress women with his not-
quite-Hugh- Grant, Anglo gorgeousness, he fell at an enamel hurdle.
"On one occasion," he writes in How to Lose Friends and Alienate
People, "a beautiful girl I was chatting to at a party asked if she
could see my teeth. After I bared my gums, she called out to her
friend: `Hey, come look at this. This guy's got "English Teeth'."
Young does not elaborate, but you can sort of imagine the grey-beige
nightmare that the American girls inspected with such fascination.
