Chicago White Sox Manager Jerry Manuel had his pitchers on the
field early Thursday afternoon for the kind of drill that most teams
put away once spring training ends. One by one, his pitchers stepped
to the mound, and with a coach hitting ground ball after ground ball,
the pitchers sprinted off the mound to field balls or cover first
base.
Manuel scheduled the drill a day after pitcher Mike Sirotka made a
wild throw during a loss to the Cleveland Indians. Another manager
might have ignored the mistake or guessed it wouldn't happen again.
Manuel took a different approach.
Even as the White Sox hustled through a drill on a warm afternoon,
