Chenin Blanc - maybe you've noticed there's a lot of it about. I
sure as hell have. Chenin Blanc is the "other" great white grape of
the Loire, the better known being Sauvignon Blanc. At its best a
great Loire Chenin beats even great Sancerre for variety of styles
and sheer complexity of flavours.
Its problem is twofold. First: there simply isn't a lot of the
stuff around, as many hectares of vines have been yanked out of the
ground to make way for more fashionable varietals. Second: the wines
don't start to really strut their stuff till they've hung around in
the bottle for a good few years, which makes them the un-flavour of
the month in an era of instant gratification.
