An 18th-century copper still, similar to one used by George
Washington, is among the items that will be displayed thanks to an
unusual agreement announced today between the Smithsonian Institution
and Mount Vernon.
In a groundbreaking pact, the two bastions of American history
agreed to the long-term loan of Washington artifacts to Mount Vernon,
as well as the pooling of some programs and expertise.
"We are able to share some of our rich collection of Washington-
related materials with the one organization that can display them in
their original setting," said Smithsonian Secretary Lawrence Small.
