Until last spring the Rylstone and District Women's Institute was
best known for its lovely suppers, mostly on account of the
scrumptious sandwiches, biscuits and cakes the ladies served. In
villages like Rylstone, surrounded by the heather-covered dales of
Northern England, the WI was a pillar of traditional rural values.
But when it came time for the WI to publish its annual calendar,
usually filled with idyllic pictures of woodlands, village greens and
postboxes, 11 women in the Rylstone and District chapter decided to
do something just a bit silly. They decided to create an
"alternative" calendar. Theirs would, of course, feature members
doing traditional WI crafts--knitting, flower ...
