THE decision to mount the stage is often a reaction to years of
feeling ignored and abused in a dead-end job.
Martin Coyote once washed dishes in Bernard Manning's brother's
restaurant in Cornwall.
Gordon Southern used to be a warm-up man for Jack Docherty, "So
this is quite a crowd for me," he said, eyeing the 30-strong
audience.
Then again, compare Paul Vallis, who has been running the Spot for
six years, does voiceovers by day, and Gina Ryan was absent because
she had suddenly glimpsed the future, with a part in a sitcom. Dave
Thompson stood in for her ... but we'll come back to him.
