Article: Injuries Will Keep Khannouchi Out of Marathon Trials

One day after gaining the U.S. citizenship he had pursued so vigorously for the past four years, Khalid Khannouchi announced today that he will not run in the Olympic marathon trials in Pittsburgh on Sunday because of injuries.

Even injured, Khannouchi--the world record holder in the event-- would have been one of the favorites to finish in the top three at the trials and qualify for the Olympics. But heeding the advice of his trainer, Gerard Hartmann, Khannouchi reluctantly bowed out.

"My heart wants to run, but what can I say?" said Khannouchi, a Moroccan native, while fighting back tears. "I have to be realistic. I don't want to be too crazy, too wild. Hey, we have a long way to go."
