White male voters are rejecting Vice President Gore in numbers
reminiscent of the failed Democratic presidential campaigns of the
1980s, posing a serious threat to his hopes of gaining the White
House this fall.
White men have been crucial to the resurgence of Republican
candidates in the past two decades, particularly the campaigns of
Ronald Reagan, although Bill Clinton neutralized their hostility to
Democratic presidential hopefuls in his own successful White House
bids.
Now white men have emerged as a crucial base of support for GOP
presidential candidate George W. Bush's bid and for the Republican
drive to maintain control of the House of Representatives, according
