BARNES residents have become high rollers. Dual-income couples
with dark blue BMWs, wide Land Rovers and an assortment of nannies
and au pairs.
Their lifestyle has prompted smarter shops to open along Church
Road and Barnes High Street. But the character of Barnes itself
hasn't changed. It is officially a commutable south-west London
suburb but it still feels like a quaint little Hertfordshire village.
Even these days, all the current shop owners have lived in SW13
for more than a decade. If you ask any of them why they opened their
shops in Barnes, the answer is always because they lived a few
