BARNES residents have become high rollers. Dual-income couples with dark blue BMWs, wide Land Rovers and an assortment of nannies and au pairs.

Their lifestyle has prompted smarter shops to open along Church Road and Barnes High Street. But the character of Barnes itself hasn't changed. It is officially a commutable south-west London suburb but it still feels like a quaint little Hertfordshire village.
