A TRAIN smashed into the buffers at Charing Cross Station early
today causing extensive damage and, yet again, escalating fears over
railway safety.
The six-car train hit the end of the line at platform three
damaging both the driver's cab and part of the station.
The incident at 4.42am involved an empty train - the 3.24am
Gillingham to Charing Cross - used for ferrying staff.
The speed is not yet known but the force was enough for the train
to smash through the buffers causing damage to the concourse itself.
The impact left a 10ft-square hole on one side of the platform
where concrete had been gouged out and thrown in the air.
Only the fact that the crash happened early in the morning ...
