THE world's most expensive train set is up for auction in London
next week and is expected to fetch as much as 100,000, writes Malcolm
Withers.
Made in 1906 by the Marklin toy company of Germany, it comprises a
spirit-fired steam locomotive with a tender, three carriages, track
and points.
The train is so large that its cab roof is slightly dished, having
had children ride on top of it as it steamed around its track.
The anonymous owner who has put it up for auction at Christie's
has a photograph taken before 1914 of his father and aunt sitting on
it.
Originally displayed in the FAO Schwarz store in New York before
the First World War, it was bought for the children of the rich and ...
