Long-term care in America, not long out of its infancy, continues to
be buffeted by the winds of change. Over the years, nursing homes
have been rocked by scandal, maligned, misunderstood, shunned, even
abused. And, at the other extreme, some look at long-term care -
nursing homes, specifically - as an irresistable pot of gold at the
end of the rainbow.
An accurate perception may lie somewhere inbetween.
The bald truth is that nursing homes are much in demand. By the
end of the century, the knowledgeable experts tell us, about five
million of us will require services inside a nursing home. Even
nowlong waiting lines are forming for admittance to the best
facilities.
