Veteran state Treasurer Leo Winters withdrew Thursday as
a candidate for re-election, saying he was guided in his decision b y
the results of the primary election that would have put him in a
Sept. 16 runoff election with Ellis Edwards.
Edwards, 39, who resigned from R.J. Edwards Inc. an Oklahoma City
family-owned investment firm in order to run for office, finished
first in Tuesday's election, getting 41 percent of the vote to
Winters' 26 percent.
Edwards, also a partner in the Orientations chain of Oklahoma City
restaurants, now becomes the Democratic nominee. He will meet the
winner of the Republican runoff between Joe Manning and State Rep.
