SAN JOSE, Calif. - Despite few innovations in 1986, makers of personal computers saw a slight improvement in sales and posted some big gains in the stock market as analysts look forward to better days in 1987.

Sales and revenues increased for most of the industry leaders, who responded to 1985's sharp decline by keeping costs down and concentrating on marketing as demand picked up.

U.S. sales of personal computers edged up to an estimated 7.6 million units worth $18.3 billion in 1986, compared with 7.2 million units worth $18 billion in 1985, according to Dataquest Inc. of San Jose. The market research firm forecasts 1987 U.S. sales of 8.5 million units worth $20.6 billion.
