NEW YORK - In the last three years alone, Bell
Laboratories Inc., the research and development arm of the American
Telephone and Telegraph Co., has come up with a stream of new
technologies that would be a credit to any major university.
Bell Labs developed the first light switching chip, which
enables computers to run at very high speeds; an undersea fiber
optic cable, and a one-megabit computer chip. It also devised a
super-fast algorithm for solving complex problems and several types
of superconducting materials.
So far, Bell Labs is still churning out new ideas at a steady
clip - to the great relief of AT&T officials. Not everyone was sure
