The great thing about "Boone," the recent book of T. Boone Pickens
Jr., is that he tells us what he learned and how he learned it.
That ranges all the way from simple lessons from his grandmother
and parents in Holdenville to building the world's largest
independent oil firm and battling toe-to-toe with famous "Big Oil"
leaders in proxy fights.
On the other hand, Pickens is frank about huge mistakes such as
the one that put Mesa Petroleum against a $300 million wall - which
led to his famous takeover attempts.
It includes sizing up other players in negotiations - just as he
sizes up players in a poker game. It also tells how he learned his
leadership style - providing opportunity ...
