Article: AIR TRAFFIC CONTROL SYSTEM NEEDS CONTROLLERS / BUT 'PIPELINE' IS SLOW

EDITOR'S NOTE - The nation's air traffic control system is still feeling the turbulence from the mass firing of more than 11,000 controllers six years ago. Reports of near-collisions are on the increase and all the while the skies are becoming more and more crowded. The Federal Aviation Administration acknowledges there is a shortage of sufficiently trained controllers at some airports, but insists that safety has not been compromised.
