Article: STUDY SAYS ALASKA SLOPE GAS COMPETITIVE IN JAPAN, KOREA

ANCHORAGE, Alaska - Alaska North Slope natural gas is competitive in Japan and Korea and could be supplying markets there earlier than predicted if a proposed Trans-Alaska Gas System is built in phases, according to a new study released Tuesday.

The study, completed by the Chicago-based Institute of Gas Technology, suggests that with a lower start-up volume, the initial cost of new Alaska pipeline, processing plants and ships can be reduced from $11 billion to about $8 billion and that the project could be in operation by late 1993 or 1994, at least three years earlier than projected.
