U.S. Sen. Charles S. Robb broke into a run today, zigging and
zagging across the street, grabbing hundreds of hands as this
Shenandoah Valley town commemorated Labor Day and, by historical
rite, kicked off the fall campaign season in Virginia.
Republican rival George Allen, who leads the Democrat in the
polls, was ahead in the parade route, too, smiling and waving his way
up the street at least a half-mile in front of Robb. As the summer
campaign season shifted symbolically to fall, Robb looked like a man
determined to catch up--and willing to sweat through his dress pants
to do it.
Democratic Party officials, meanwhile, tried to give their only
