Badfinger was to power pop what Sylvia Plath was to prose. But
there's no need for Cliffs Notes to discern the darkness behind the
music of Pete Ham and Tom Evans, songwriters for the Welsh quartet
that came to be as well known for the misfortune and miseries that
killed it off as for its early ties to the Beatles. Singing along
with the startlingly sturdy new compendium "The Very Best of
Badfinger" will suffice.
Badfinger was groomed for eminence by the Beatles themselves. Demo
tapes from the combo, which formed in Ham's home town of Swansea,
Wales, and was originally known as the Iveys, got to the Beatles'
road manager.
