Asbestos, once was considered a miracle mineral that could save lives
by reducing the prospects of fire, has become a major hazard problem
for real estate owners.
The removal of asbestos, which has the potential of causing lung
cancer, is one of the most expensive potential problems facing real
estate leaders today as state and federal lawmakers and regulatory
agencies wrestle with it.
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency estimates there are
735,000 buildings in the nation, not including schools and
residences, which have asbestos. No estimate has been made of the
number of such buildings in Oklahoma.
