Article: STOCK MARKET STARTS NEW YEAR STRONG; DOW INDUSTRIALS UP 76.42

NEW YORK (AP) - The stock market got off to a running start on 1988 Monday, rising sharply in buying encouraged by an easing of pressure on the dollar in foreign exchange.

The Dow Jones average of 30 industrials jumped 76.42, or 3.94 percent, to 2,015.25, for its fourth largest point gain ever. The record of 186.84 points was set on Oct. 21 last year, just after the worst of the September-October crash.

Advancing issues outnumbered declines by about 8 to 1 on the New York Stock Exchange, and other broad measures of stock price trends turned in impressive showings.
