IT was 20 years ago this month that Dance Place first opened its
doors in a studio above a Ben Franklin store in Adams-Morgan. Edged
out later when gentrification hit and rents quadrupled, Dance Place
moved on, hanging its hopes on a former welding warehouse in
Brookland, near Catholic University, where it still resides today.
Having put down permanent roots, Dance Place is one of the few
nonprofit dance theater/studios in the country to own its own
building, and has become Washington's premier center for contemporary
dance.
To kick off its 20th anniversary season this weekend, Dance Place
